I love anything with a good patina. Not quite as much as John Derian though. His new East Village apartment featured in T magazine is a study in how to renovate without making everything look brand new while diminishing the possibility of an electrical fire. In his hands, a former sculpture studio has become a home that doesn't ignore its former life as a factory or the neighborhood's early tenements. This country's contractors could learn a few things from John Derian.
