Where Fashion Begins

What's really funny about this photo is that I was so focused on Bill Cunningham that I didn't notice The Sartorialist until I opened the photo on my computer. I live for the street style photos each fashion week but I'm really disappointed by the shots posted so far.  They all seem to be the usual suspects and friends of the street style photogs.  The girls are all dressing avant guard or in attention seeking ensembles.  What happened to shooting beautifully dressed editors and buyers attending fashion week?  Those are the ladies to whom I relate and who inspire me. I have no desire to spend my hard earned dollars on ripped tees and micro-minis featured on so many websites.  If things don't change, I think I might have to start taking my own street style photos.

Fun at Fashion Week

Fashion week ended for me today and not a moment too soon.  I don't think my feet could make it one more day.  It's always a wonderful ride but also very exhausting.  I don't know how most editors go on to cover London, Milan, and Paris fashion weeks. I am taking the night off to recover and will be back tomorrow refreshed and ready to go.

One person who never takes a day or night off is 80+ year old photographer Bill Cunningham.  He can outpace anyone at fashion week and still makes the fashion flock giddy with excitement when they see him.  He took my photo this morning as I exited a taxi on my way to the Michael Kors show.  Even if it never makes The New York Times, just knowing that for one split second, I was worthy of his lens made my day.  Hope his big, bright smile makes yours too.

Armor

"Fashion is the armor to survive
the reality of everyday life."

- Bill Cunningham

For those of you who live in New York, the documentary Bill Cunningham New York is now available On Demand on Time Warner Cable.  I highly recommend it.  The photo of Bill Cunningham chatting with Stan Herman outside the Ralph Lauren fashion show venue was taken by me.  Oh, and that other street style photographer is in it too.

Uptown Chic

APT with LSD on Vogue.com has featured their first uptown apartment.  I'm sure it only made the cut because it looks like a downtown apartment and is owned by a rock star and his former fashion designer wife. It reminded me a little of Marcelo Lucini's Buenos Aires flat I posted earlier today. It belongs to Laura and Diego Garcia and their baby Georgiana and is definitely worth a look.

P.S. I saw Bill Cunningham New York tonight and LOVED it!  The Film Forum has added three more showtimes daily but it runs only through March 29th.  Run don't walk to see it before it leaves.  The movie will definitely make you want to run up to Bill Cunningham and give him a hug the next time you see him.  And you know what, I just might!

Now Playing

Just a reminder that the fabulous documentary Bill Cunningham New York is now playing at the Film Forum in New York.  For those of you who don't know, Bill Cunningham is the originator of street style photography.  His On the Street feature in The New York Times has been running for what seems like forever.  Bill is one of those old school New York characters that make this city so exciting.  I can't wait to see this film and learn more about what makes Bill tick!

Bill Cunningham New York

The New York Times Style photographer Bill Cunningham is a living legend.  Seeing him on the street or at fashion shows will never cease to excite the fashion flock.  He once took my picture on Fifth Avenue and even though it never made it into the paper, it was still a thrilling moment.   He reminds me of Jeremiah Goodman in that he continues to pursue his lifelong passion at 80.  I'm sure it keeps him young.  It also seems fitting that the new documentary about him is entitled Bill Cunningham New York because he is New York.  The film is the first feature by director Richard Press and it has already won the audience award for best documentary award at the Melbourne International Film Festival. I'm not sure when Bill Cunningham New York will be in the theatres but I'll keep you posted.  Anna Wintour once said, "we all get dressed for Bill." I will definitely continue to dress for Bill in the hopes of catching his eye.  But if I don't, I will be just as excited to catch a glimpse of him.
